As I sit on a bus headed to DC, it would be a slight misnomer to say I feel rejuvenated. More accurately, I feel sharpened; honed to an edge by the frigid nights and foggy mornings, by unsheltered cliffs and unyielding slopes, by the weight my shoulders bore and weight my mind was able to set aside. I feel tempered by the empathy individuals have for one another, knowing we all walk a path consisting of difficulty, meaning and reward.

The answer is yes. Yesterday was really the first time I've considered stopping. After 24 miles in two days, the weight of my pack is become increasingly apparent as an issue. It's not the muscles or even joint issues but actually the high friction spots where the weight sits that give up before the will power does: my shoulders, hips, lower back and forearms are pretty raw.

After the 12 miles to reach Bear's Den from my previous shelter, I'm taking a day off at the hostel here. It's a quaint stone building full of friendly people doing a good thing in providing a respite for weary thru hikers.

April Twelth

Yesterday I reached David Lesser Memorial Shelter, passing by the Sweet springs store in Loudon county.

Rain storms are rolling in so I decided to take a zero day after four and five miles on days one and two respectively. With an early start and dry gear, I'll make the 11 miles to Bear's Den on what projects to be a sunnier Saturday.

Spring might be here

Maryland is an odd place. It’s position just south of the Mason-Dixon line with simultaneous ties to northeastern culture exemplifies how mixed it in is in culture for one but in climate for another. I can only hope this is the true spring. What i found today very much affirmed me in a freshly budding tree just down the street from where I live. Just a few days ago I marveled at how lush and robust the flowering foliage was and I return to find a canopy buzzing with excitement. Sitting under the tree, I initially felt something akin to a plane overhead before realizing that low hum, that vibration was a litany of bees forming a sonic umbrella over me. It’s definitely unnerving to be around. I managed to get a few shots without being stun.
